Episode 20: Joe Reinhart
Happy 20th episode, everyone!
I’ve finally finished the new home of 25 O’Clock, which is my basement. It’s actually pretty nice, and I’ll put up pics soon of the new secret lair. To tell the truth, I don’t think I’ve had everything all out and functioning in... well... ever. I’ve been acquiring gear and equipment for various purposes over the last 15 years or so, and I’ve finally got a place for all of it. It is immensely satisfying.
On the show this week is Joe Reinhart. Joe runs The Headroom, a studio here in Philadelphia. He’s also in Dogs On Acid, who are outstanding. He’s also in Hop Along, who are also outstanding, and are getting a lot of buzz lately on the national level. They’ve got a new record on Saddle Creek Records called “Painted Shut”, and it is probably my favorite release of 2015 so far. And it’s gonna take some pretty hefty contenders to unseat it, if you ask me.
I have to admit, I was a little anxious going into my conversation with Joe. I’d been a fan of his work for a while, and I also didn’t know him. I obviously get that he’s a regular guy doing some pretty irregular work, and I’m definitely not starstruck or anything like that. But he is the real deal, and has been touring around and playing some big rooms to a lot of people. So I had a bit of reverence going in, and tried not to approach it like a fan, but rather as a peer of sorts. I think we did alright. He’s been fortunate to lead a remarkable life so far, and he’s definitely aware and grateful to be doing so. In the end, it was like talking to any other passionate musician, and once you get past someone’s resume, it’s really just about talking about the thing you love, which is music.
I hope you all had a good holiday last weekend. Mine was a whirlwind of family and eating and being outside and drinking beer. I did get some quality time with Mrs. 25 O’Clock, and actually spent a good deal of time with my mom, which was great and doesn’t happen as often as it should. As you get older, part of staking your independence in the ground is to distance yourself from your parents. But it’s good to circle back around and reestablish bonds and all that. We are by no means estranged, my mom and I. We talk on the phone at least once a week. All is healthy and great and would probably make anyone with a less-than-great relationship with their parents roll their eyes at me. Anyways, the point I’m really just trying to make is that I hung out with my mom and it was rad.
I’ve got some things on the table being worked out in 25 O’Clock land. I’m putting together a couple of live 25 O’Clock tapings, they’ll be part of the Philadelphia Podcast Festival this year. It’ll be two Saturdays, 8/29 and 9/5, at Bridgeset Sound at 7th and South Streets. Big thanks to Steve from Bridgeset for offering the space and being an all out cool dude.
